Biography

Chris Stanbury - Director of Nursing, Psychology and AHPs

After having worked in a range of support roles during undergraduate years I joined the NHS permanently in 1981 as a psychology graduate, registering as an RMN in 1985. Following roles in acute psychiatry and psychological therapies as staff nurse, and ward sister, supporting the development of new mental health and psychotherapy services in North Durham, I moved into a joint educational and clinical role as senior nurse in 1991, gaining further registration in both psychotherapy and as a nurse tutor together with a masters degree in education by 2000.

Working as Clinical Nurse Specialist I project managed the Acute Mental Health Care Collaborative and completed the national mental health nurse leadership programme and was appointed as Deputy Director of Nursing in Mental Health and Learning Disabilities in 2002. This post was redeveloped as Associate Director of Nursing with organisational mergers in 2006.

In the past 6 years I have further developed nursing strategy and practice locally, undertaken successful secondments to the SHA, to project manage a health authority collaborative project over 2 years in the quality of nursing practice, and more recently to the DH to deputise for the Director of Mental Health Nursing.

I was appointed to my current role in June as Acting Director of Nursing, Psychology and AHPs, following the retirement of the current executive director. Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys is a large Mental Health and Learning Disability Trust which became a foundation trust in July 2008, employing over 3000 nursing staff and delivering the full range of secondary and some tertiary services to the local population.
