National Ward Managers/Team Leader Development Programme

Southern Cohort

(Details for the Northern Cohort to follow)

This very successful programme has run for 10 years most recently under the NHS Confederation.
Nurse Directors have always been actively involved in delivering the programme and it is highly valued by those who have attended. The MHLDNDL forum has reached agreement with the NHS Confederation to take over the management and delivery of the programme, we are planning to run the next cohort early in 2012.
The Forum is delighted to announce that the there will be two Ward Managers programme running starting in 2012 covering the Southern and Northern area sectors.

INTRODUCTION

For over ten years the Ward Managers Development Programme has been running to respond to the new challenges and needs of the Ward Manager/Team Leaders in mental health services.  The programme focuses upon the development of the individual within the context of their role and the three main strands are: Understanding Self; Understanding Teams and Understanding Organisations.

The 2012 Southern programme will once again be facilitated by Hilary McCallion, Director of Nursing and Education (South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust), Valerie Wark, Personal and Professional Development Consultant and Peter Hasler, Development Officer to the forum.   The Northern programme will be facilitated by Noreen Young, Director of Nursing, Clinical Governance and Safety (South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust).

• To support ward managers/team leaders to develop their leadership styles and skills
• To explore career development and the future.
• To understand and experience coaching and its impact on self and on others

HOW IS THE PROGRAMME PRESENTED?

A variety of different methods are used to enhance the learning experience, these include: psychometric tests, role play, games, discussion and coaching.  It is expected that all participants take part actively and contribute fully to gain the best experience.  On completion of the programme next steps for each individual are considered and participants are encouraged to continue the support networks they have formed.
